2 Responses to The Heart Sutra, chanted by the SokukoJi monks

  1. Richard Fidler says:

How do chanters find time to breathe? The chant is so rapid I can’t continue at that pace. Ideas?

  2. Sokuzan says:

They take a breath whenever they need to, and the other chanters fill in at that time. An important thing to remember when chanting aloud with others is to listen to their voices rather than your own voice, and you will naturally harmonize.

If you are chanting this by yourself, just take a breath whenever you need to. Even though at the Temple where the Heart Sutra is practiced every day, you can start slowly and speed up. You’ll get there. That is why it’s called a “practice” not a performance. ~Sokuzan
