You can’t really think your way out of addictions. Rather than talking about recovering from addictions by controlling behavior, Sokuzan teaches addiction awareness meditation. Through sitting meditation practice, by training the mind to observe what is happening in all of the sense fields, mind and body not separate, we are training awareness to see situations as they arise so what to do becomes clear without evaluating or trying to get rid of anything. You need to spend a lot of time training your mind. Dedicate at least an hour a day to your practice.

  1. “See the stillness through contrast.” Yes. “Truth is over-rated”. To lie – I wonder if it is better to say truth is subjective. Perhaps instead of lying as you say would it not be wiser to just be with the person, do we need to even say anything like that? Perhaps yes, they are looking for confirmation of their being. I would rather not lie. When a person in your Sangha queried the stillness through contrast, I found your response confusing somewhat insofar as it seemed to change the quality and meaning of contrast. Also is the broom closet door open ? But truth is relative and lies are big business in the world we live in. Thank you again – grist for the mill.
