SokukoJi in Kalamazoo

Kalamazoo Zen is an affiliate of SokukoJi Buddhist Temple Monastery in Battle Creek, which is rooted in the Soto Zen Lineage of Japan.

Sokuzan, our guiding teacher, began his formal study of Buddhism in 1973 with the Tibetan master Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche. In 1990 he met his Zen master Kobun Chino Roshi.

SokukoJi is a Japanese name which translates to “Temple of Immediate Light.”

Our community looks to provide individuals with an opportunity to practice meditation, receive teachings, and participate in book studies on a weekly basis. All are welcome regardless of ethnicity, gender, orientation, religion, or background. We strive to create as inclusive a community as possible.
