SokukoJi Welcomes All
SokukoJi is open to any and all who would like to learn to meditate and/or learn about Buddhism in general.
While our most attended events are our Wednesday evening meditation class (7:00 – 9:00 p.m.), our Sunday morning service (10:00 – 11:30 a.m.), and our all-day sitting practice the last Saturday of every month (9:00 a.m. – 9 p.m.), at other times, our resident monks will welcome you into the zendo and introduce you to the sitting practice of meditation. Please consult our schedule page for the best times to stop by.
If you have never attended a Soto Zen Buddhist Temple before, you may be unsure of protocol. At SokukoJi there is no specific dress code, but you are asked to remove your shoes before entering the main floor of the Temple. Also, if desired, you are welcome to put on one of the meditation jackets that we provide. In the zendo, most meditators sit on zafus (meditation cushions), however, we have chairs available as well. During the Sunday morning and Wednesday evening sutra chanting, you are asked to stand. Your level of involvement in the forms observed at SokukoJi above and beyond these are at your discretion.
For a better idea of how we practice meditation at SokukoJi, listen to one of Sokuzan’s talks on meditation instruction.
We endeavor to create an open environment for anyone interested in awareness practice.
