There are 16 precepts observed in Soto Zen Buddhism. The first three are called The Three Treasures:

  1. Take refuge in the Buddha – Someone who is awake
  2. Take refuge in the Dharma – Truth that The Buddha taught
  3. Take refuge in the Sangha – The community studying the Buddha’s teachings

Sokuzan discusses each one and answers questions from the Sangha.

Results tie us into preconceptions of what should be happening and what shouldn’t be happening. When looking for results we miss what is happening at that moment. Sokuzan talks about meditation and not focusing on results.

Sokuzan starts by reading from Dogen Zenji quoting Vashibandhu, “Mind is like the world of space, constantly bringing forth empty things. When you realize space, there are not good or bad things.” Realizing space is not just the concept of space or emptiness, but seeing the space of what arises. This is the beginning of training the mind and the way each of us make things difficult for ourselves and others.

The ego needs a lot of support from a lot of advertisements. For many, no matter the amount of credentials, friends, things, etc. they still aren’t happy or feel good. Parts of our ego are so discontinuous that it starts to crack and fall apart and we look for someone or something to blame. Sokuzan talks about awakening from this and answers questions.
